The monopoly

Energy networks are monopolies, i.e. there is exactly one system operator per consumer. Where you live determines who your system operator is. You cannot switch to a different system operator. The general terms and conditions governing the system access contract you conclude with your system operator are subject to E-Control’s approval.

The free market

Electricity and natural gas supply are liberalised in Austria. Suppliers procure the electricity or gas they need for their consumers from domestic producers or from abroad, or they produce it themselves. The electricity and gas prices may vary among suppliers. Price comparisons really pay off!
