Renewables in the EU

Austria is among the European leaders in the field of electricity production from renewable energy sources.

The following chart shows the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption for 27 EU member states. With approximately 30.1% Austria ranks fifth in the EU. The EU-27 average is 12.4%. The chart also shows the targets for 2020. The EU member states have agreed on raising the share of renewable energy in total energy consumption to 20% in the EU at large by the year 2020. The target for Austria was set to 34%.

The relatively big share of renewable energy in Austria compared to Europe has an impact on the structure of electricity generation. The share of electricity generated from renewable energy sources in Austria is about 61%, a percentage unparalleled in the EU (see next chart).
