Regional energy market developments

The present legislative package for creating an internal gas and electricity market in the European Union, which is tied to fulfilling climate targets, is called the “Clean Energy Package”. It stipulates the transfer of regional and European decision-making powers, for example, concerning the integration of electricity markets, from the concerned institutions (TSOs and authorities) to the organisations representing them at European level (ENTSO-E and ACER).

The package also creates new tasks for regional committees, some of which have to be newly formed (e.g. the European entity for distribution system operators). In consequence, there is, for example, close cooperation in the electricity market between the Austrian electricity market and its neighbouring markets through regulatory authorities and TSOs from other “CORE” countries but also among the entire regulatory community represented in CEER and ACER.
